Living in Bastrop, TX: The Honest Pros and Cons

Thinking about moving to Bastrop, Texas? Whether you’re relocating from out of state or just looking for a quieter lifestyle outside of Austin, Bastrop offers a lot of perks — but it’s not perfect for everyone. In this article, I’m sharing the honest pros and cons of living in Bastrop so you can make the most informed decision possible.

PROS

1. Affordable Housing

Compared to Austin and other nearby cities, Bastrop offers great value. With a median home price in the $300K–$400K range, you can afford a single-family home with a yard, and maybe even some land.

2. Peaceful, Small-Town Feel

Bastrop has a relaxed pace and friendly community vibe. It’s the kind of place where people say hello, shop local, and look out for their neighbors. If you’re done with big-city stress, Bastrop could be a breath of fresh air.

3. Proximity to Austin

Need to work or play in Austin? Bastrop is just 30–45 minutes away. That means you can enjoy the peace of country living while still having easy access to jobs, entertainment, and big-city amenities.

4. Natural Beauty Everywhere

Bastrop is home to the Colorado River, Bastrop State Park, Lake Bastrop, and tons of trails. If you love being outdoors, kayaking, or weekend camping trips, you’ll love what Bastrop has to offer.

5. Growth and Opportunity

With new developments, schools, restaurants, and major employers moving in, Bastrop is on the rise. That means more options for shopping, dining, and increased home value in the years to come.

CONS

1. Hot Summers and Bugs

Texas summers are no joke — and Bastrop is no exception. It gets hot and humid, and you’ll need to prepare for mosquitos, wasps, and other bugs, especially near wooded areas or the river.

2. Commute Times

While the drive to Austin isn’t too long, it can feel like a lot if you’re doing it every day during rush hour. If you don’t work remotely, make sure you plan around traffic.

3. Limited Nightlife

Bastrop has great local restaurants and a few spots for live music, but if you’re looking for a party scene or late-night options, you’ll likely be driving into Austin.

4. Rural Internet in Some Areas

While most neighborhoods have solid internet, some rural parts of Bastrop still struggle with slow or unreliable service. If you work from home, it’s best to check the provider options in any home you’re considering.
